Merzig is the seat of the Merzig-Wadern district and lies on the Saar near the borders with Luxembourg and France. The town is known for the Saar loop a few kilometres upstream and for its ceramics tradition.

Location and access

The A8 motorway runs east of town, Saarlouis is 20 kilometres south east, Dillingen 15 kilometres south east, Trier 45 kilometres north west and Luxembourg 50 kilometres west. Mettlach is twelve kilometres north west.

Economy and construction sites

Metal, ceramics and plastics firms work on the Merzig industrial estate. The regional hospital is another large employer. The Dillingen ironworks lies 15 kilometres south east and during blast furnace relines is the region's largest client.
