Fehmarn is the third largest German island and is linked to the mainland by the Fehmarn Sound bridge. The Puttgarden ferry port is the starting point of the route to Denmark, and the fixed Fehmarn Belt link is being built alongside it.
Location and access
The A1 motorway crosses the Fehmarn Sound bridge straight onto the island and ends at Puttgarden. Heiligenhafen is 20 kilometres south west, Neustadt 45 kilometres south west and Luebeck 85 kilometres south west. The railway to Copenhagen runs across the island.
Economy and construction sites
Puttgarden ferry port and the construction work on the fixed Fehmarn Belt link are the largest clients and occupy construction, steel and tunnelling specialists for years. Added to that are the island's building and trade firms and the hotels, which refurbish mainly in winter.

The price range runs from 26 to 52 euros per person per night. Because of the belt link works, supply on the island is tight all year, and in summer holidaymakers add to it. Allow at least six weeks' lead time.

Yes, but supply is tight because the belt link permanently occupies capacity. As fallbacks we recommend Heiligenhafen and Oldenburg with a 20 to 25 kilometre journey.
