You reach the A23 via Heide in 40 minutes, Husum is 25 kilometres north, Heide 30 kilometres south east and Sankt Peter-Ording 15 kilometres west. The station links Toenning with Husum.

Food and metal firms work on the Toenning commercial estate, and the harbour serves fishing and coastal protection. The Eider barrage is overhauled regularly, which occupies steel and hydraulic engineering specialists. Further work comes from the wind sector in Husum.
